Celadon Meiping vase, Goryeo dynasty, Second half of the 12th–first half of the 13th century
Meiping vase, celadon with inlaid bamboo and crane design, Goryeo dynasty, Second half of the 12th–first half of the 13th century. Yucheon-ri Kiln, Buan. Height 29.2 cm. Maximum Diameter 17.6 cm. Weight 2,053 g. The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka (gift of SUMITOMO Group, the ATAKA Collection), photograph by NISHIKAWA Shigeru. (Accession No. 00158).
The beautiful S-shaped body line that stretches out at the shoulder and tapers down toward the body is one of the stylistic features of meiping vases of the Goryeo dynasty. The cloud-collar decoration enclosing lychee branches decorate four parts of the shoulder, and the lower section of the body bears bands of lotus petals and key frets. Scenes of cranes wandering under the tall bamboo trees are depicted on the four sides of the body. The composition of the motifs combines the lyrical and pictorial elements, effectively delivering a graceful atmosphere. This handsome motif and the deep, grayish blue-green color of the glaze make this work a Goryeo celadon masterpiece. As sherds of a similar work were discovered at the kiln site of Yucheon-ri in Buan-gun, this work also could have been a product of this kiln.
