Finger ring, ca. 1100
Finger ring, ca. 1100, The National Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Finger ring of gold, thin and narrow with a massive plate of gold in which a red stone is inserted. Inner diameter: 19.5 mm. Weight: 5.1 g. On the back of the ring there is a runic inscription inscribed: "AROTA AGLAGALA LAGA": arota is believed to be the Greek "areté" = virtue, and agla repeated three times with reversed letters, is formed from the beginning of the Hebrew sentence : "attah gibbor leolam adonai" = You are strong forever, Lord! The ring's Nordic owner has regarded it as a talisman. Found as loose finds during plowing on Lundsgård klint in Revninge on Funen in 1821.
