KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA.-In connection with Malaysia’s 50th anniversary of independence, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is launching “Neither East Nor West: The Lafayette Collection: Asia in the Age of Monochrome.” This is the first exhibition in Asia to be held in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, custodians of the Lafayette Collection.
The theme of the exhibition is the exchange of cultures between East and West in the ‘Age of Monochrome’ – the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The title “Neither East nor West” comes from a poem by Rudyard Kipling, showing that differences in geography, race and class are of no consequence when individuals of different backgrounds work together.
