An export ivory hinged box - 19th Century
Of rectangular form, the hinged cover with rounded corners and barbed rims carved within three reserves in relief with figures engaged in various leisure pursuits in a palace garden setting, all against densely carved blossoms including roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and prunus, two capitalized letters 'D' incised in the center of the cover panel; all side panels carved in relief with a similar motif of figural and garden scenes, the rims of the cover and base panels decorated with floral bands, the inside of the box well cushioned and lined with apple-green velvet. 9 7/8 x 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in (25 x 11 x 8.5cm) - Sold for $2,000 plus Premium and tax Bonhams.
