Sarah Bernhardt, French (1844-1923) - A bronze bust cast by Rudier of Maurice Bernhardt, dated 1920
signed and dated Sarah Bernhardt 1920, inscribed Alexis Rudier. / . Fondeur. Paris., dark brown patina on a stepped veined green marble base, 44cm high, (17" high) overall - Estimate: £3,000 - 5,000
Footnote: Maurice Bernhardt was reputedly 'the most handsome man in Paris'. In 1888 the Art Journal magazine mentioned that Sarah was working on a bust of her son Maurice, perhaps to coincide with his forthcoming marriage to Maria Jablonowska, a Polish princess (1863-1914).
Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was most famous actress of her era, known not just in her native France but across the world for her gifted performances and stage presence. She performed in London on many occasions and was at the centre of the artistic elite of that period including Oscar Wilde and Ellen Terry.
