10_Bourgeois_3I00006M2

Jardinière - Kangxi Period (1662-1722)
Porcelain - Height: 19 ½ inches (49.5 cm)

Note: Massively potted jar of cylindrical form, tapering toward the base to and resting on a flat, unglazed base. Decorated in deep shades of underglaze cobalt blue, the central section with a continuous landscape of two pheasants, perched atop rockwork amidst flowering trees of peony, prunus and several other pairs of small birds. The form of the present piece was used generally in an outdoor setting as either a jardinière or as a fish bowl. The exquisitely painted, animated scene of birds and plants would be a perfect complement for its natural setting and function. The pheasant, with its long elegant tail feathers and colorful plumage is an emblem of beauty as well as good fortune. The depiction of a pair would also communicate the wish for matrimonial harmony.
