CATALOGUE NOTE: It is extremely rare to find Yongle period white-glazed bowls of this elegant form and incised decoration of peony flowers, although a closely comparable slightly smaller piece, incised on the exterior with a leafy composite scroll bearing three chrysanthemum blossoms alternating with mallow and camellia below a key fret border around the rim, possibly from the Kenneth Malcolm collection and illustrated in Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1948-49, pl. 25, no. 108, was sold at Christie's London, 17th June 2003, lot 18.
See further two bowls of this type, from the Wu Lai-hsi collection, incised with the flower scroll pattern and a key fret border sold in our London rooms, 26th May 1937, lots 107 and 108; and another bowl, from the Clark collection, included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition The Arts of the Ming Dynasty, London, 1957, cat. no. 9, also sold in our London rooms, 26th June 1973, lot 247.
