An Egyptian greywacke Bes head. Late Period, circa 664-332 B.C.
Of typical form, with a finely striated beard, the smiling lips parted to reveal teeth, with a snub nose and large oval eyes with extended cosmetic lines, the pointed eyebrows upraised, with wrinkles across the forehead, wearing a cross-hatched band above and hanging down the sides of the head, an arched recess behind for attachment, 17/8in (4.8cm) high, chipped. Sold for £3,120
Provenance: Formerly in the Gawain McKinley Collection, acquired before 1996.
