NOTE: No certain prototype is known for this composition, but a version sold, London, Sotheby's, 28 November 1956, lot 29 (present whereabouts unknown), is considered by Ertz from photographs to possibly be from Jan Brueghel's own hand.1 Another very similar composition to the present lot was sold, Amsterdam, Christie's, 11 May 1994, lot 170, as by Jan Breughel the Younger.
