A Bronze Group Of The 'Water-Moon'- Guanyin With An Adept, China, Song dynasty, 11th ct.

440111

A Bronze Group Of The 'Water-Moon'- Guanyin With An Adept, China, Song dynasty, 11th ct.

Sitting in easy pose with the right foot on the throne, the right arm resting graciously on the knee. The figure emanates a serene and meditative charisma, exhuded by the gracious pose and the austere expression of the elaborately worked face. Framed by rocks referring to a grotto and the worldly paradise of Mount Potakala, on the right side the adept Sudhana with oblation in his hand. The votive group alludes to the Avatamsaka-Sutra, the 'Flower Garland'- Sutra, which describes how Sudhana visits 53 different beings on his spiritual quest for the ultimate truth. Advised to do so by the Bodhisattva of Wisdom Manjushri, he is here at his twenty-eigth encounter at Mount Potkala to see Guanyin, tib. Avalokiteshvara. The so-called Water-Moon Guanyin became a very influential topos in the 10th and 11th centuries in China, Korea and Japan - H. 24,5 cm - Very minor repair - Estimate 14 000 €

Property from a Dutch private collection
