The Power of the Eagle
The eagle pendant on this necklet is particularly significant as it is the symbol of the Austrian Empire, previously represented by a double headed eagle as part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. The eagle is seen throughout the world and throughout history as an emblem of power. This is because it creates an impression of majesty and authority while in-flight. As early as 5,000 years ago, ancient Sumerians chose the eagle, in spreadeagle form, as their emblem symbolizing their power. Ancient Romans followed suit, as did Emperor Charlemagne, and Napoleon.
This piece of Austro-Hungarian jewellery is from a period which is considered a continuation of Renaissance design and is sometimes called "Neo-Renaissance". The Neo-Renaissance is a style period in the 19th century. Items from this period are sometimes known as Holbeinesque.
