NOTE: The war-like gods Mars and Minerva were popular pendants in the sixteenth century as male and female figures in full armour. In the Trojan wars Minerva favoured the Greeks whilst Mars championed the Trojans. The two gods battled on the plains of Illium and Minerva conquered with a boulder thrown at Mars. The battle was allegorical of Wisdom, personified by Minerva, overthrowing the destruction of war, personified by Mars.
