A gold and enamel mounted mother-of-pearl clock with English Royal Provenance, Gordon, London, the enamel work attributed to A.J. Strachan, circa 1840

fusee and chain movement with lever escapement, plain three-arm steel balance, ruby endstone, the quadrangular mother-of-pearl veneered case mounted with chased gold scrollwork enclosing a monkey, squirrel, and birds of paradise, surrounded by flowers, all highlighted in translucent and shaded enamels, champleve pink and blue enamel dial centered by a bouquet, the back engraved and partly gilt with a coat of arms. The backplate with plaque signed GORDON / LONDON, inside of the door engraved Buckingham Palace / No. 77. Height 10.1cm. Estimate 10,000—20,000 USD - Lot Sold 43,750 USD

NOTE: A similar carriage clock sold at Sotheby's, Geneva, May 16, 1995, lot 75, and had been in the collection of the Earls of Stanhope, Chevening, Kent, and depicted enamel reserves of Windsor Castle and children in rustic costume.

The gold and enamel work is consistent with the workshop of A.J. Strachan (working 1799- died 1842-50), principal supplier of gold boxes to Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, often for royal presentation purposes.
