Leonardo Coccorante (Italian, 1680-1750), A capriccio view with ruins, figures in the foreground and the sea beyond

untitled3

Leonardo Coccorante (Italian, 1680-1750), A capriccio view with ruins, figures in the foreground and the sea beyond

oil on canvas. 41 x 31 1/2in (104.2 x 80cm). Estimate: $20,000 - 30,000

Footnote: We would like to thank Professor David Marshall for authenticating this painting from a photograph.

Notice:  Prof. David Marshall has indicated that this painting is typical of the artists work in imagery and handling and can be compared to Ruins by the Sea: Storm Effect in Grenoble, (Musée de Peinture et de Sculpture), particularly in the use of the arch motif and in the delicate treatment of the swags and acanthus leaves on the capitals. According to De Domenici the figures in some Coccortante paintings were added by Giacomo del Po, Giuseppe Tomajoli and Giovanni Marziale, and various works have figures that have been attributed to some of these. In the case of the subject work, the figures of the man and woman at the right  seem to be of especially high quality and are very much in the style of Pietro del Po, although they are also close to the figures in many other works by Coccorante, some of which must postdate del Po’s death in 1726, so they are probably by Coccorante himself, as he was influenced by del Po.
