David Roberts RA: "Lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land" @ Mathaf Gallery, London

1

David Roberts, A Modern Mansion, Cairo,

Roberts’ travels to the Middle East from 1838-1839 were described by his biographer James Ballantine as the “great central episode of his artistic life”. He returned from this trip laden with material which, over the course of the next decade, he made into a series of watercolours for lithographs executed by Louis Haghe and published between 1842-1849.

This exhibition will feature a wide selection of first edition lithographs, sensitively hand-coloured. On display will be scenes of the Holy Land, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Nubia, including stunning architectural views of ancient temples and monuments, landscapes, and the busy streets of Cairo. Prices range from £200 - £1,250.
