Josef Hoflehner: Seeing The Calm @ Bonni Benrubi Gallery, New York
Josef Hoflehner, Snow Covered Pier II, Austria, 2006
Bonni Benrubi Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by photographer Josef Hoflehner: SEEING THE CALM. This exhibition encompasses some of the most emblematic images by this world-renowned landscape photographer. Traveling the globe from his native Austria across Europe to Japan, Vietnam to Iceland, India to New York to Dubai and beyond, Hoflehner captures unexpected stillness and serenity in his richly tonal black and white photographs. Hoflehner photographs both well-known vistas and the most remote reaches of the planet with the same knowing regard, creating images that are sometimes haunting, often otherworldly and always poignant in their flawless subtlety. The viewer is transported as Hoflehner deftly reveals the true nature of his subject matter by transforming the mundane into sublime, emptiness into rich and transcendent completeness. In Hoflehner’s images, the flashy excess of Dubai becomes epic and timeless; a snow-covered field is fraught with narrative; an ancient building has a fresh façade.
Named Nature Photographer of the Year in 2007, Hoflehner has published 10 books and is exhibited worldwide. This is his first exhibition at Bonni Benrubi Gallery.
