A fine pair of famille rose bowls. Daoguang six-character seal marks and of the period

Each one with its domed cover (also bearing a seal mark); decorated in yellow, orange, green and pink enamels with a pair of butterflies beside large peaches or pomegranates and stalks of bamboo; each seal mark in underglaze-blue. 11cm (4¼in) diameter. (4). Estimate: £30,000 - 35,000

Footnote: For a very similar pair of bowls, but without covers and bearing the nien-hao of The Jiaqing Emperor, see Christie's Hong Kong, Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Tuesday 31 October 2000 (Lot 923). Compare also the pair from the E.T.Chow Collection, offered as Lot 170 at Sotheby's Hong Kong on 25 November 1980.

Similar examples, with their covers, would appear to be rare, however for a single bowl see pl.190 (p.145) in 'Ming Qing Ciqi Jianding/Qingdai bufen' by Baochang Geng/Taipei 1987. For a Daoguang pair with covers, however, compare S. Marchant & Son 'Nineteenth Century Mark and Period Porcelain' [June 1991]/No. 45.
