A Ming four-tiered red lacquer box and cover. 15th/16th century

Footnote: For a similar Ming box from this genre, see Lot 112 from Christie's 27 November 1967 sale of 'A Celebrated Oriental Collection'. The Christie's example was of very similar dimensions, and was also decorated with a Scholar and two boys on a terrace beside a pine tree; it was catalogued as second half of the 15th century. Compare also the four-tiered box and cover at The Palace Museum, illustrated (Catalogue No.95) in 'Carved Lacquer in the Collection of The Palace Museum' (Beijing/1985).
