A 'Ru-type' archaistic pear-shaped vase, hu, Yongzheng seal mark and of the period
Of facetted pear shape rising from a tall splayed foot, the gently waisted neck flanked by two cylindrical handles, moulded with horizontal ridges around the body, covered all over with a pale green crackled glaze, wood stand. 35.4cm (14in) high. (2). Sold for £90,000
Provenance: an English private collection
Purchased in Asia in the 1980s
Note: The glaze of the arrow vase is based on a Song Dynasty prototype and the form is inspired by Western Zhou bronzes. Similar glazes with delicate craquelure were applied during the Yongzheng Period to other vases of archaic inspired form, such as a square vase with five holes, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Kh'ang-hsi, Yung-Cheng and Ch'ien-Lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1986, Catalogue no.64. A related ru-type archaistic arrow vase, with Yongzheng seal mark, but smaller and with rounded sides, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 23 October 2005, lot 319.
