Cecil Beaton is well known for his contribution to fashion photography, portraiture, and theatrical design. Beaton attended but did not graduate from St. John’s College, Cambridge, and utilized his university contacts in arranging a portrait sitting with the Duchess of Amalfi. This early portrait was published in Vogue, and led to numerous commissions and assignments in the world of fashion and the elite. Beaton went on to photograph a number of celebrities in Great Britain and in Hollywood, and worked for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Beaton is recognized for a keen awareness of the scene as a whole, resulting in works that capture the glamour and essence of his subjects and era. ( wiki)
