oil on canvas 139.7 x 192.4 cm. Est. €80,000 - €120,000

Notes: We are grateful to Dr Paul Huys Janssen for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original (verbal communication, 3 October 2008).

The subject of St. Irene was particularly popular in Utrecht at the beginning of the 17th century. St. Sebastian was invoked as a protector against the plague, and an epidemic killed many in the city between 1624-32 and 1634-37 (see P. Huys Janssen, Jan van Bijlert 1597/98-1671, Amsterdam, 1998, p. 107, no. 38). According to legend, St. Irene was a Roman widow who cared for St. Sebastian and nursed him back to health after he had been left for dead, and is considered a patron saint of nurses. She most often appears as she is seen here, drawing an arrow from St. Sebastian's chest. She was martyred in 288 AD and her attribute is a jar of ointment similar to that of the Magdalene.

Jan Hermansz van Bijlert (Utrecht , 1597 or 1598 – Utrecht, November 1671) was a Dutch portrait painter in the style of Caravaggio. Jan van Bijlert was the son of a a stained glass worker, and became a student of Abraham Bloemaert. He travelled in France and on a Grand Tour, and in Rome in 1621 he became a member of the painters' circle known as the Bentvueghels, but in 1624 he was back in Utrecht, where he was appointed regent of the Sint-Jobsgasthuis.
