Irving Penn explains in his Introduction that his series of colour studies published in 1980 as Flowers were made over seven summers from 1967 to 1973. The majority, including the poppies were shot in New York. The poppies, and notably this glorious specimen, were grown in the fields of a nursery on the North Shore of Long Island.
