Ming dynasty Green-glazed & Longquan celadon @ Bonhams

The heavily-potted dish carved on the slightly convex centre with a scaly descending five-clawed dragon amidst cloud scrolls, enclosed by a freely-carved lotus scroll at the cavetto, the underside left undecorated, all below a sea-green glaze stopping at the unglazed ring at the foot, burnt orange in the firing. 34.5cm (13½in) diam. Estimate: £10,000 - 15,000, HK$ 120,000 - 180,000

: Compare a slightly larger (42cm diam.) dish in the Percival David Collection, in the British Museum, incised with a very similar five-clawed dragon, illustrated by G.St.G.M.Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1958, pl.92. Another dish of this large size was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 3 December 2008, lot 2537. A slightly smaller (33.6cm diam.) dish, closer in size to the present example, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2005, lot 1147.

The deep sides incised around the exterior with lotus and aquatic plants above a band of lappets at the foot, the interior centred with an incised cash and trellis diaper, enclosed by a frame of radiating petals within a lotus scroll border, covered overall in a thick green glaze.  31.2cm (12¼in) diam. Estimate: £3,000 - 5,000, HK$ 35,000 - 59,000

The heavily potted dish relief-decorated at the centre with a writhing four-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl, enclosed by an incised wave design at the cavetto below the everted, flattened rim, the exterior carved with a series of ribs to the sides, all beneath a rich green glaze. 36.7cm (14½in) diam. Estimate: £3,000 - 5,000, HK$ 35,000 - 59,000

Compare another dish of this type in the Topkapi Saray Museum, illustrated by R.Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul. A Complete Catalogue I. Yuan and Ming Dynasty Celadon Wares, London, 1986, fig.61. Another, slightly smaller example (34.8cm diam.) with a bluish glaze is illustrated in Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, pl.205 and front cover.

The sturdily-potted cup with well-rounded sides and slightly everted rim, supported on a partly-hollowed spreading stem in imitation of bamboo, covered overall with a thick, unctuous green glaze. 12.2cm (4¾in) high. Estimate: £2,500 - 3,500, HK$ 30,000 - 41,000

The sturdily potted cup with well-rounded sides and slightly everted rim, supported on a partly hollowed, spreading stem imitating a section of bamboo, covered overall with an unctuous green glaze, except for the foot ring burnt brick-red in the firing. 11.3cm (4½in) high. Estimate: £2,000 - 3,000, HK$ 24,000 - 35,000

The double-tiered shrine enclosing biscuit figures of Guandi and Zhenwu, flanked by attendants and before a snake and tortoise on the upper tier, and a mythical beast on the lower tier, the entrances flanked by dragons and partially enclosed by fences, the shrine covered overall with an olive-green glaze. 30.9cm (12¼in) high. Estimate: £2,500 - 3,000, HK$ 30,000 - 35,000
