An Exceptional Pair of Finely Carved Chippendale Director Style Chinoiserie Pier Glasses. English, Circa 1860. Each mirror is divided into two main sections by 'C'-scrolls, 'S'-scrolls and rockwork. The upper sections are further divided by a temple folly and foliate tendrils and flanked by twelve further mirrored panels. The frame is richly carved with fleshy acanthus, 'C' and 'S'-scrolls and perching Ho-Ho Birds on rocaille, water-work bases, the whole surmounted by a rustic Chinese figure within a fanciful pagoda.... Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden The son of a Flemish calligrapher and fencing master, David Bailly first apprenticed to a local painter in Leiden and then to a portrait painter in Amsterdam. He worked for a short time as a journeyman in Hamburg before traveling to Venice and Rome at the age of twenty-five. On his return voyage, Bailly probably worked for several German princes.
