The treatment of both the dragon and the background of this silk tapestry is typical of Central Asia, where motifs enjoyed great longevity and creative recombination. Each of circular shape, the first fitted with a gilt repoussé sheet decorated with an outer band of birds and grapevines under a central band of leaping hounds and vines, plain pierced boss, the second cast with an outer grapevine and bird meander under a central band of leaping mythical beasts enclosed by a raised band with sawtooth edge, both with heavy malachite patina; 4 and 4 3/4in (10 and 12cm) diameter.
