Beaker Vase. Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration. H. 53 cm, D. 25.1 cm. Jingdezhen, China. Qing Dynasty, Kangxi (1662-1722 AD). LL 101. Lady Lever Art Gallery.

.Beaker with bulbous stem, slightly spreading base, and flaring mouth. On the bulb are four panels with European ladies, three in gardens - one on a swing - and one in an interior. On the neck are four ju-i (ruyi ''as-you-wish'') shaped pendants, painted with fruit and foliage in white on a blue ground, the edges moulded in light relief; between them are ju-i designs; and below, floral scrolls. On the lower part are lightly moulded leaf-shaped panels with floral scrolls. Borders of hatched vandyke pattern.

An early and interesting example of European designs copied on porcelain by a Chinese painter. The costumes suggest a date about 1700.

Gourd vase and lid. Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration. H. 34 cm (without stand), DB. 16.5 cm. Jingdezhen, China. Qing Dynasty, Qianlong (1736-1795 AD). LL 26. Lady Lever Art Gallery.

Vase, of double gourd shape with stopper, painted with a gourd vine in white shaded with blue on a marbled blue ground. This vase was made at a time when blue and white porcelain was out of fashion in China. Nevertheless, it displays a lively and imaginative sense of design, with the gourds in the decoration neatly echoing the overall form of the vase. The double-gourd shape is a traditional Chinese form not usually found in wares made for export, suggesting that this vase may have been intended for the domestic market. This shape has been long popular in porcelain, some particularly good examples being datable to the 16th century. In the Qianlong period (1736-1795), after a slight lapse in its popularity, it reappears in not only in blue and white but also in underglaze copper-red, a fine example being in the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam.
