Lot 86. An Imperial Longquan celadon dish, Ming Dynasty, Yongle period (1403-1424); diameter 12 3/4 in., 32.4 cm. Estimate 40,000—60,000 USD. Lot Sold 398,500 USD. photo Sotheby's 2011

the well-potted body raised on a slightly tapered foot, finely carved to the interior with fruiting lychee branches, the deep rounded sides decorated with a floral scroll comprised of lotus and leaves continuing on the exterior, evenly applied with a lustrous glaze of soft olive-green tone thinning to a paler tone at the rim

NOTE: Vessels of large form and extremely fine quality, were made in the Longquan kilns from the late 14th century onwards under the supervision of and to the order of the Ming court. The preference was for large-sized display vessels such as the present example with carefully stamped, molded, incised or carved designs that were often related to painted designs on contemporaneous blue and white porcelain pieces, as a dish decorated with lychees in the Ardebil Shrine in Teheran illustrates, compare John Alexander Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Aberdil Shrine, 1981, pl. 41.

For related Longquan examples, compare a very large Longquan celadon dish of circular shape decoated with grapevines, and another very large dish of barbed outline also decorated with lychee sprays, from the collection of the Topkapi Museum, Istanbul, illustrated in Ryoichi Fujioka and Gakuji Hasebe, Ming Dynasty, Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 14., Tokyo, 1976, cat. nos. 130 and 131. A related dish was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 14th November, 1989, lot. 11.
