Balenciaga. Semi-formal evening-dress, 1966
Sleeveless evening dress of fine blue linen, with a fitted bodice, a deep, scooped neckline and full gathered skirt which falls to the knee in front and drops to the floor in the back. This peacock-tail silhouette is one for which Balenciaga was renowned. The dress is hand-embroidered in a stylized floral motif of openwork eyelet to reveal flesh toned silk lining in the bodice and blue silk in the skirt.

Each brightly painted on both sides with two matching pairs of figures of courting couples, he wearing a blue frock coat and pink breeches, she with a long pink robe and holding a basket of flowers, all on a rich puce-red ground enriched with Indian lotus clusters between the panels and cicada lappets above the shoulder. 8.2cm (3¼in) high (2).
