BADEN-BADEN.- Anselm Kiefer is known to be one of the most important contemporary artists nationwide as well as worldwide. Through January 15, 2012, selected works by Kiefer from the Grothe collection can be seen at the Museum Frieder Burda. The curator Walter Smerling has selected 33 large format pictures from 30 years, focussing on the decade 2000. For the first time, the work ”Essence“ from the current series of alpine landscapes are being publicly exhibited. From the collection Frieder Burda, the work „Böhmen liegt am Meer“ from 1995 is shown.

The focus of the exhibition is on the monumental picture „Der fruchtbare Halbmond“ The fertile half moon (460 x 760 cm), a work from the year 2009. It refers to the consolidation of the occident and orient and is being exhibited in Germany for the first time. Kiefer’s theme is the tower of Babel and the cradle of our culture, situated in the fertile Mesopotamia. The tower divided religions and languages, but Kiefer believes in the originally uniting aspects: the foundations are no longer simply destroyed, but also under construction. The former power of the fertile land can be regenerated, the solidarity of the different cultures becomes possible.

When selling his substantial collection, Hans Grothe did not sell his works by Anselm Kiefer. He acquired his first pictures by Kiefer out of mere
fascination and because he was emotionally touched; since at first, the rational contents did not really become accessible to him. The collection includes works from three decades that fascinate due to their unique materials, the compelling density of their messages and the intensity of their aura, becoming especially visible when contrasting the different works.

In the works selected for the exhibition, the German past is not so much at the center of attention as it is characteristic for several other works. The curator Walter Smerling explains: “It is rather the christian-jewish or mythological themes that dominate. And the often described emotionalism of Kiefer’s works seems to be strangely altered, reduced or even neutralized. The works are impressive, without being overwhelming, and they invite you to analyze and reflect on them“.

Right from the beginning, Kiefer‘s paintings were located between abstraction and figuration. Symbolic combinations are created from lead, concrete, dried plants, glass, barbed wire and other heterogeneous materials. Due to numerous pastose, not too colorful layers, the surface of the picture receives a relief structure, leading to a plasticity of the pictures nearly resembling a sculpture.

Anselm Kiefer was born in Donaueschingen/Baden-Württemberg in 1945. He attended school in Rastatt, where today you can see a monumental installation by him, made from carved wood. He studied arts at the art academies in Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf. From 1993 to 2006, he lived and worked in Barjac, in the Département Gard in Southern France. Since 2007, Anselm Kiefer has lived in Paris, where in 2010 he was called to the Collège de France as a professor. In 1999 in Tokio, he was awarded the prestigious Praemium Imperiale Prize. In 2008, he was awarded the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels.

The exhibition was developed in close cooperation between the Museum Frieder Burda and the Foundation for Art and Culture in Bonn. A catalog is available from the editorial Wienand Verlag.

 

 

 

 

 

BADEN-BADEN.- Le Musée Frieder Burda présente un des artistes de notre temps les plus importants en Allemagne et dans le monde, Anselm Kiefer. Né en 1945 à
Donaueschingen en Baden-Württemberg, Anselm Kiefer a grandi à Rastatt où l‘on peut voir aujourd‘hui à la galeriemunicipale une monumentale installation de gravures sur bois. Il a étudié les beaux-arts dans les académies de Fribourg-en-Brisgau, Karlsruhe et Düsseldorf. De 1993 à 2006, il a vécu et travaillé à Barjac dans le département du Gard en France. Depuis 2007, il réside à Paris où il a été nommé professeur à la chaire artistique au Collège de France en 2010. C‘est en 1999 que lui est attribué à Tokyo le célèbre prix Praemium Imperiale. Il est lauréat du prix de la Paix des Librairies et Editeurs allemands pour l‘année 2008.

Les oeuvres exposées ont été choisies dans la collection Hans Grothe : 33 peintures de grand format réalisées pendant 30 années, en mettant l‘accent sur la dernière décennie. L‘oeuvre « Essence » , issue de la série actuelle de paysages alpins sera exposée pour la première fois. Le lien avec le Musée Frieder Burda est créé par la toile « Böhmen liegt am Meer » (1995), qui fait partie de la collection Frieder Burda depuis de nombreuses années.

La peinture monumentale « Der fruchtbare Halbmond » (460 x 760 cm) est au coeur de l‘exposition. C‘est une oeuvre de 2010 qui fait référence à l‘union de l‘occident et de l‘orient et qui sera montrée pour la première fois en Allemagne. Kiefer parle ici de la construction de la tour de Babel et du berceau de notre culture dans la Mésopotamie féconde. La construction a séparé le sreligions et les langues, mais Kiefer croit à l‘union originelle ; les murs de fondation ne sont plus seulement détruits, ils sont aussi représentés en état de reconstruction. Les forces anciennes du pays fécond peuvent être réactivées, la réunion des différentes cultures est possible.

Les oeuvres choisies pour cette exposition n‘ont pas pour thème central le travail sur le passé de l‘Allemagne, thème souvent considéré comme caractéristique. Selon le commissaire de l‘exposition Walter Smerling, « ce sont beaucoup plus les thèmes judéo-chrétiens et mythologiques qui dominent. Même le pathos souvent décrit dans les oeuvres de Kiefer apparait particulièrement rompu, retiré et neutralisé. La collection impressionne, sans trop submerger le spectateur et invite à une réflexion analytique. ». L‘oeuvre peinte de Kiefer se situe depuis le début entre abstraction et figuration. Des liens symboliques se créent à partir de plomb, béton, plantes séchées, verre, fil de fer et autres matériaux hétérogènes. Les nombreuses couches sont épaisses et lacouleur en retrait, ce qui donne à la surface une structure en relief, si bien que la plasticité des peintures devient presque sculpturale.

Hans Grothe ne s‘est pas séparé des oeuvres d‘Anselm Kiefer, même après la vente de sa collection importante. C‘est la fascination et l‘émotion qui l‘ont conduit à acquérir ses premières peintures de Kiefer parce que de prime abord, il a eu difficilement accès à leur contenu rationnel. La collection comprend des oeuvres de trois décennies, oeuvres qui fascinent toujours par leur matérialité unique, leur signification profonde et l‘intensité de leur aura qui transparait particulièrement dans les rapports entre les oeuvres.

L‘exposition est le résultat de la coopération étroite entre le Musée Frieder Burda et la Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn. Le catalogue de l‘exposition (allemand et francais) est publié par Wienand Verlag, Cologne; environ 160 pages, 27,80 euros au musée.
