PROVENANCE: Acquired by the grandmother of a private collector, probably in Paris, just after the Second World War;
Thence by descent until sold, ('Property from a Private Collection'), London, Sotheby's, 24 April 2008, lot 115, where acquired by the present owner.
NOTE: A comparable composition, with a similarly laden basket of fruit, is in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, a version of which, dated An X (1802), was sold in New York, Christie's, 26 January 2011, lot 112. At the time of the painting's sale in 2008 the attribution was endorsed by Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie.
