A pair of Chinese Export famille rose Urns and Covers, circa 1825 Photo: Christie's Images Ltd., 2012
Each of shield shape flanked by upright flowering branch handles, enameled with a different continuous view of boys on a terrace, the front and back with a molded portrait medallion of a beauty, the finial as a seated woman taking tea; 18¾ in. (47.6 cm.) high (4). Estimate $10,000 - $15,000
Notes: Urns of this classical form were fashionable from the late 1790s, usually made with "pistol" handles. These florid flower stem handles, which seem to be a slightly later development, are seen in a large pair of urns in the house of Edward Carrington, prominent Rhode Island China trader in the 1800-1840 period. See J.M. Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, p. 167.
