The square archaeological revival design plaque depicting cupid in relief with a quiver of arrow and a bow and flaming hearts within a frame decorated with white and blue enamel, glazed compartment to reverse, maker's mark JB, fitted case, John Brogden, 6 Grand Hotel Buildings, Charing Cross, London. Estimate 6,000-8,000 GBP

LITERATURE; Cf: Charlotte Gere and Judy Rudoe, Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria, A Mirror to the World, London, 2010, page 275 for quote.
Cf: Geoffrey Munn, The Triumph of Love, Jewellery 1530-1930, London, 1993.
Cf: Geoffrey Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the Nineteenth Century, London, 1984, page 166.

NOTE: John Brogden along with contemporary jewellers Robert Phillips often looked to antiquity and archaeology to gain inspiration for the subject matter of their jewels. They were so concerned with historical accuracy that they even attached 'small tickets explaining the history of the things imitated' to each piece.
