Finely carved in imitation of jade as a scaly dragon with two horns and a segmented mane coiled amidst and atop clouds, the semi-opaque glass with tiny flecks of russet color; 2¼ in. (5.7 cm.) across, box. Estimate $28,000 - $35,000

清十八世紀 涅白料仿白玉團龍鎮紙

Provenance: Christie's, South Kensington, 15 July 2005, lot 222.

Notes: This rare, small dragon-form white glass weight with its flecks of russet color is imitating jade, something that was done in China as early as the Warring States period (475-256 BC) when glass was substituted for jade in the making of bi, and during the Han dynasty (206 BC - AD 220) as a substitute for jade burial accesories. It was during the Qing dynasty that Chinese glass reached its apogee. This was due in considerable measure to the establishment by the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) of the Imperial Glassworks which came under the administration of the Zaobanchu, the Deparment of Palace Supply, within the Imperial Household Department. The Imperial Glass Workshops in the reigns of the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors, produced many fine glass items, and the consumate skill evident in the present carving indicates that it was most likely the product of these workshops.

For other small glass objects made in imitation of jade see C. Brown and D. Rabiner, The Robert H. Clague Collection: Chinese Glass of the Qing Dynasty, 1644-1911, Phoenix Art Museum, 1987, pp. 66-7, nos. 82-90.
