Chinese "swatow" dish. China, 17th century. Porcelain, painted in overglaze green and black enamels on opaque white glaze. The Aga Khan Museum. Coarsely potted and covered with a thick, crackled glaze, this dish belongs to a distinct group of porcelain, the so-called ‘Swatow wares’. Swatow is a Dutch mistranslation of Shantou, the port from which such ceramics were supposedly exported, although this port was actually not used until the Qing dynasty (1644 –1912). The decoration of the narrow flange, the middle register and the central medallion consists of a leaf scroll painted in underglaze cobalt blue. Dish with tugrakes spiral style decoration. Turkey, “Iznik”, 1530-40.  Stonepaste, underglaze painting over a siliceous slip coating. The fine volutes that characterize this dish are directly inspired by the scrolls that from the 1520s onward adorned the imperial monograms (tugra) of Süleyman the Magnificent (1520-66). The task of executing the tugra was allotted to a specialist craftsman, the “tugrakes”, whence the name “tugrakes spiral style” given by N. Atasoy and J.
