Bowl marked with the character for altar. Porcelain with underglaze cobalt-blue decoration. Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province 江西省, 景德鎮. Ming dynasty, about AD 1400–1500. On loan from Sir Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art. PDF B688 © Trustees of the British Museum

Height:  58 mm. Diameter: 109 mm. Small porcelain cup. Underglaze blue with parallel lines around inner and outer rim and foot. Central roundel inside with inscription, and inscription on base.

The central roundel inside frames a four-character apocryphal Xuande mark. The base carries the character 壇 (tan ‘altar’). This mark has been found on excavated Xuande porcelains made at Jingdezhen. Original cups of this type were used at court sacrifices. Their decoration is the simplest of all Xuande imperial blue-and-white porcelains.

Acquisition notes: Purchased from H. R. N. Norton
