Mariano Fortuny. Embossed linen from a Sample book. Venice, Italy, 1950s

Mariano Fortuny, born 1871 - died 1949. Embossed linen from a Sample book. Venice, Italy, 1950s. Museum number: CIRC.807-1967. Victoria & Albert Museum, London © V&A Images

The sample illustrated in Art Deco Textiles has a design of silver grape vines on a dull green ground.

This linen fabric is a sample from a book of fabrics that Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) designed in 1927. The book, however, probably dates to the 1950s when Fortuny's successor was working with Lee Limited in England and America. Fortuny was a Venetian textile and dress designer who was interested in antique textiles. He experimented with reproducing lavish fabrics such as silks and velvets, which he hand-printed with metallic pigments. He is also known for his pleated ‘Delphos’ dresses, which were loose, flowing and of Neo-classical inspiration.

Based on research of Philip Sykas into A.H.Lee and relationship of company with Fortuny in Venice.
