A Fine and Large Blue and White 'Dragon' Bowl. Mark and Period of Jiajing - Photo Sotheby's

the deep rounded sides rising from a slightly tapered foot to a flared rim, brightly painted around the exterior in shaded tones of inky cobalt with two dragons striding among clouds reaching for a ‘flaming pearl’, each finely detailed with a grinning face and shaggy hair, muscular limbs issuing five outstretched claws, and an undulating scaly body emitting flames, all above a band of overlapping ruyi skirting the foot and between double-line borders at the foot and rim, the interior left undecorated, the base inscribed with a six-character reign mark within double circles in underglaze blue: 31 cm., 12 1/4 in. Estimation: 800,000 - 1,000,000 HKD - Lot. NOTE DE CATALOGUE: Jiajing bowls of this large size and decorated with underglaze blue dragons are rare. Another example from the Koger collection is illustrated in John Ayers, Chinese Ceramics. The Koger Collection, London, 1985, pl. 57. A smaller bowl with a related design was sold in our London rooms, 9th June 1992, lot 235. Compare also a bowl of this form and size, painted with phoenix amongst flower scrolls above the ruyi band, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red , vol. II, Shanghai, 2000, pl. 142; a blue and white Wanli bowl of smaller proportions and decorated with a very similar motif, is in the Shanghai Museum, included in Mingdai guanyao ciqi, Shanghai, 2007, pl. 1-84. Versions of these large bowls also exist with a related decoration painted in iron-red, see a bowl from the Nancy and Ira Koger and Meiyintang collections, illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 4, London, 2010, no.1686, and another sold in these rooms, 8th October 2010, lot 2682.
