Lot 363. A large and finely carved Rhinoceros Horn Libation Cup, 17th Century. Length 7 1/8  in., 18 cm. Estimate 300,000 - 500,000 USD. Unsold. Courtesy Sotheby's

of broad, shallow, oval form, the exterior carved and undercut with a pine branch growing out from the side of the cup extending into the interior to form the handle, beside a scholar seated at his desk in a rocky grotto, one attendant feeding a fish in a stream, while another heats water on a stove for tea, the interior further carved with rocks and pine;

Note: The carving of the rocks and trees on the present lot, closely resembles the carving on a Kangxi period cup from the Edward & Franklin Chow collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th April 2011, lot 2717. The way the pine trees are rendered, with leaves that appear as if they were applied and incised is strikingly similar. Compare also a cup from the collection of Kenyon V. Painter, Cleveland, sold in these room, 19th March 2007, lot 380.
