LONDON - Yesterday, George Daniels’ Pocket Chronometer sold for £362,500 ($549,478) in Sotheby’s London sale of Treasures, Princely Taste. Made in 1986, this 18 carat yellow gold pocket chronometer was the first of Daniels’ watches to include his revolutionary invention of the Co-Axial escapement – the main advance in escapement technology since Thomas Mudge’s lever escapement of 1754. Considered by many to be the greatest watchmaker since Abraham Louis Breguet, Dr Daniels produced only 25 unique mechanical watches in his life time, making almost every component by hand (est. £300,000-400,000).

The Treasures sale also included a wonderful group of rare clocks dating from the 16th century through to the 18th century and an extraordinary jewelled gold and enamel automaton silkworm, also known as the 'Ethiopian Caterpillar' which sold for £230,500 ($349,392). Made in Geneva circa 1810, very probably for the Imperial Court of China, this automaton counts among the six or seven recorded surviving caterpillars. With its naturalistic colouring and spotting, it was the closest to a live silkworm (est. £150,000 - 200,000).
