HONG KONG, 4 September 2013 – Continuing in its pioneering tradition of offering the world’s most perfect white diamonds of truly exceptional size, Sotheby’s is honoured to announce that it will offer a Magnificent Oval Diamond of Supreme Importance in its Hong Kong auction of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite on 7 October 2013

The remarkable 118.28 carat, D colour, Flawless, Type IIa stone of Excellent Polish and Excellent Symmetry is the largest D colour Flawless diamond ever to appear at auction, as well as the largest oval shaped, D colour Flawless or Internally Flawless diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Only four other white diamonds of this quality over 100 carats have ever been sold at auction, of which Sotheby’s has sold three – the present stone is nearly 20% larger than the first and previously largest ever offered, the 101.84 carat ‘Mouawad Splendour’, sold at Sotheby’s in 1990*. Each of those four stones was offered in Geneva salesrooms, making the Magnificent Oval Diamond the first D colour diamond of this size ever to appear at auction in Asia, a testimony to the importance of Hong Kong as an international jewellery auction centre.

Discovered in 2011 from the deep mines in Southern Africa, the 299 carat rough of the Magnificent Oval Diamond is one of the largest and most beautiful diamond roughs found in recent years. Carefully and meticulously worked over a period of months, the resulting stone is estimated to achieve US$28/35 million / HK$220/280 million** at auction in October – in excess of the current highest price ever paid for any white diamond at auction***.

4 Septembre 2013- Perpétuant sa longue tradition d’ offrir des diamants d’exception, la maison Sotheby’s est honorée d’annoncer qu’elle mettra aux enchères un diamant exceptionnel de taille ovale de 118.28 carats, lors de sa prochaine vente à Hong-Kong, le 7 octobre 2013. 

Ce remarquable diamant de 118.28 carats d’une symétrie et d’un éclat exceptionnels a non seulement été certifié « flawless », et de couleur D (le plus haut degrés de couleur pour un diamant blanc) mais il est également un diamant de Type IIa, une catégorie rare et extrêmement recherchée représentant moins de 2% des diamants répertoriés dans le monde. 

Il s’agit du plus gros diamant ovale jamais évalué par le Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Seulement quatre autres diamants blancs de plus de 100 carats de cette qualité ont été vendus aux enchères par le passé dont trois par la maison Sotheby’s. La taille du diamant présenté à Hong Kong en octobre est près de 20% supérieure au « Mouawad Splendour », vendu en 1990 et jusqu’alors considéré comme le plus grand  diamant blanc .

Découvert en 2011 dans les mines d’Afrique du Sud, le diamant brut de 299 carats dont est extraite la pierre compte parmi les plus importants et les plus beaux diamants bruts jamais découverts. Ayant été méticuleusement taillé durant plusieurs mois, ce diamant de 118.28 carats est aujourd’hui mis en vente avec un estimation comprise entre 28 et 35 millions de dollars. 

Si les quatre précédents diamants blancs exceptionnels ont tous été vendus à Genève, la mise en vente de ce diamant  confirme le statut de Hong-Kong comme centre mondial des ventes de haute joaillerie.

Cet été, Sotheby’s a également annoncé la vente d’une autre pierre d’exception dans le cadre de sa vente de Hong-Kong le 7 octobre : un autre diamant bleu  « Fancy Vivid Blue » taille brillant et certifié « Internally Flawless ». Estimé à plus de 19 millions de dollars, il s’agit du plus grand diamant “Fancy Vivid Blue” rond jamais certifié par le GIA (Gemological Institute of America).
