Geneva – Sotheby’s Geneva announces today that it will present The Pink Star, the most valuable diamond everto be offered at auction, in its sale of Magnificent Jewels on 13November 2013. A world’s natural treasure estimated in excess of $60 million, this 59.60‐carat oval cut pink diamond is the largest internally flawless fancy vivid pink diamond that theGemological Institute of America (GIA) has evergraded.

Commenting on the forthcoming sale of The Pink Star, David Bennett, Chairman of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division in Europe and the Middle East and Chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland, said: “I have had the privilege of examining some of the greatest gemstones in the world over the past 35 years, and I can say, without hesitation, that The Pink Star diamond is of immense importance. Its exceptionalrichness of colour – graded as ‘vivid pink’ by the Gemological Institute of America – combined with its extraordinary size, are characteristics that surpass those of any known pink diamond in State, Royal, or private collections. It is difficult to exaggerate the rarity of vivid pink diamonds weighing only five carats,so this 59.60 carat stone is simply off any scale, and passes, I believe, into the ranks ofthe earth’s greatest natural treasures.”

Not only has The Pink Star received the highest colour (1) and clarity grades from the GIA for pink diamonds, it has also been found to be part of the rare subgroup comprising less than 2 % of all gem diamonds ‐ known as Type IIa: stones in this group are chemically the purest of all diamond crystals and often have extraordinary optical transparency. In addition, this extraordinarily important gem is more than twice the size of the magnificent ‘Graff Pink’ – the 24.78 carat fancy intense pink diamond which established a world auction record for a diamond and any gemstone or jewel at $46.2 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2010. The current record price per carat for a pink diamond ($2,155,332) was set by a 5‐carat fancy vivid pink diamond (2).

“The occurrence of pink diamondsin nature is extremely rare in any size”, said Tom Moses, senior vice‐president of the Gemological Institute of America. “It’s our experience that large polished pink diamonds – over ten carats – very rarely occur with an intense colour(…) The GIA Laboratory has been issuing grading reports for fifty years and this is the largest pink diamond with this depth of colour [vivid pink] that we have ever characterised”*

The 132.5 carat rough diamond was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999 and painstakingly cut and polished by Steinmetz Diamonds over a period of two years and transformed into thisstunning gemstone.Unveiled to the press and public asthe ‘Steinmetz Pink’ in Monaco in 2003,the stone wasfirstsold in 2007 and subsequently renamed ‘The Pink Star’. 

In 2003, the diamond was shown at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, in the Splendor of Diamonds exhibition, along with seven of the world’s rarest diamonds including the De Beers Millennium Star, the Allnatt diamond, and the Moussaieff Red. In 2005‐2006, it wasthe star attraction of the Diamonds exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London. The stone also featuresin all authoritative books on the subject. 

Eversince they were first discovered in the mines of India centuries ago, pink diamonds have been coveted by rulers and prized by connoisseurs. They are probably the most desirable of all the coloured diamonds. Many of the great gems of history happen to be pink diamonds, including the ‘Williamson', the ‘Hortense',  the ‘Darya‐i‐Nur' and the ‘Agra'.  

The sale of The Pink Star continues Sotheby’stradition of bringing some ofthe rarest andmost extraordinary objects to market. Sotheby’s Geneva has sold a number of the most valuable diamonds in the world and holdsthe current world auction record for a diamond and any gemstone orjewelsince the sale of the ‘Graff Pink’ ‐ an exceptionally rare and truly magnificent Fancy Intense Pink diamond of the purest, vibrant hue, weighing 24.78 caratsfor CHF 45.4million ($46.2million) (2).

Genève – Sotheby’s a l'honneur d'annoncer que le Pink Star ‐ un diamant d'une valeur inédite surlemarché des enchères ‐ seramis en vente le 13 novembre prochain, dansle cadre de la vente de Haute Joaillerie de Sotheby'sGenève. Véritable trésor de la nature estimé à plus de 60millions de dollars, ce diamant rose ovale de 59,60 carats est le plus grand diamant "fancy vivid pink" et "internally flawless" jamais certifié parleGemological Institute of America (GIA).

S'exprimant à propos de la prochaine vente du Pink Star, David Bennett, Président du Département de Haute Joaillerie en Europe et au Moyen‐Orient et Président de Sotheby's Suisse, a déclaré: « J'ai, en 35 ans de carrière, eu le privilège d’examiner quelques‐uns des plus beaux diamants au monde; je n’ai donc aucune hésitation à affirmer que le Pink Star est hors norme. Aucune collection royale, aucunmusée ni collectionneur privé ne possède de diamant rose d’une telle taille et d’une telle couleur. Les diamants roses « fancy vivid pink » de seulement cinq carats sont d’une extrême rareté mais lorsque qu'ils atteignent 59,60 carats comme  le Pink Star, ils ne peuvent qu’être élevés au rang de trésors naturels ».

Le Pink Star possède non seulement le plus haut degré de couleur (1)et de pureté pour un diamant rose d’après la classification du GIA, mais il s’avère également être un diamant de type IIa, une catégorie trèsrecherchée ne comprenant que 2 % des diamants répertoriés dans le monde. Les pierres appartenant à ce groupe sont les plus chimiquement pures et possèdent souvent une extraordinaire transparence optique. 

Par ailleurs, le Pink Star fait deux fois la taille du Graff Pink ‐ un magnifique diamant rose « fancy intense pink » de 24,78 carats adjugé 45,4 millions de francs ($46,2 millions) chez Sotheby’s Genève en 2010 – une enchère record pour tout diamant et bijou jamais vendus aux enchères. Le record par carat pour un diamant rose ($2.155.332) est détenu par un diamant « fancy vivid pink » de 5 carats (2)

« La nature ne produit qu’une infime rareté de diamants roses, quelle que soit leur taille »,souligne Tom Moses, Vice‐Président du Gemological Institute of America. « La couleur des diamants roses de grande taille (de plus de 10 carats) est rarement intense. (…) En cinquante ans, les laboratoires du GIA ont expertisé de nombreux diamants; celui‐ci est sans conteste le plus grand diamant d’un rose si intense qu’il nous ait jamais été donné de certifier. » *

Le diamant brut de 132,5 carats dont est extrait le Pink Star a été découvert par De Beers en Afrique en 1999. Il a fallu près de deux ans à Steinmetz Diamonds pour tailler et polir cette pierre d’exception. Dévoilé à Monaco en 2003 sous le nomde « Steinmetz Pink », le diamant a été vendu en 2007, avant d’être renommé le Pink Star.

En 2003, le diamant figurait dans l’exposition Splendor of Diamonds de la Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, aux côtés de sept des plus importants diamants au monde, dont le De Beers Millennium Star, le Allnatt et le Moussaieff Red. Pièce phare de l’exposition Diamonds du Natural History Museum de Londres en 2005‐2006, cette pierre est présentée danstousles ouvrages de référence surle sujet.

Depuis leur découverte en Inde il y a plusieurs siècles, les diamants roses n’ont eu de cesse d’être convoités par les grands de ce monde et les collectionneurs. Ils sont certainement les pierres les plus recherchées et comptent parmi eux de grands exemples dans l’Histoire, à l’instar du Williamson, de l’Hortensia (aujourd’hui au Louvre), du Darya‐i‐Nur et de l’Agra. 

La vente du Pink Star perpétue la tradition de Sotheby’s de présenter au marché des objets d’une exceptionnelle rareté. Sotheby’s Genève a dispersé quelques‐uns des diamants les plus importants jamais mis aux enchères, établissant en 2010 une enchère record pour tout diamant et bijou lors de la vente historique du Graff Pink pour 45,4 millions de francs ($46,2millions) (2).

Compte tenu de l’intérêt suscité par un trésor de cette nature à travers le monde, le Pink Star fera l’objet d’une exposition internationale qui fera notamment étape à Hong Kong,New York, London, Zurich et Genève où il sera mis aux enchères.
