In the 1980s, reports start to emerge that high quality Rubies were being found in the alluvial sediments of northern Vietnam from deposits in the Luc Yen and and Yen Bai areas. These placer deposits were discovered by farmers who found them while working the land. That was the start of a booming gem trade in Vietnam - where this brilliant gemstone originated. It is an UNHEATED natural Ruby with great depth of color that looks larger than the 5.22 carats that it is because of the manner in which it was faceted. A GIA Ruby Origin report attesting to its origin accompanies this stone.
What a difference a distance in geography can make: if this Ruby were from Myanmar (Burma) then the market valuation would be significantly higher because Burmese Rubies are considered to be the consummate locality for this prized gemstone. If the country of origin report had not been done, then many people would conclude that the stone was Burmese because of the bright and lively quality of the stone and the depth of color. This is an exceptionally fine gemstone.
