Blue and White Porcelain Basin with Romantic Scene, China, Kangxi Period (1662-1722). Photo Auctionata - Berlin

Finely painted figural décor. Diameter: 36 cm. Height: 7 cm. Estimation : 1 600 / 2 000 €

Provenance: From a German Private Collection

This large, deep porcelain basin with accentuated foot rim and broad lip was created during the Kangxi Period (1662-1722). It shows a central depiction of a Chinese scholar in a pine garden. A Chinese Deity is standing next to the man, pointing towards a dreamlike appearance of a young woman in company of her servant and with a white hare at her feet.
The animal and flower symbolism in this plate indicates a romantic motive; the pine tree, for example stands traditionally for a fulfilled marriage. Along the rim and underneath, the basin is decorated with lotus and cherry blossoms as well as peaches. Underneath, it additionally shows a centrally placed blossom twig, which was often used during the Kangxi Period instead of a reign mark.

The porcelain basin is in overall fine condition yet shows flaws in the glazing and material inclusions.
The rim of the plate shows some fritting and two minor chips.
The diameter is 36 cm, the height 7 cm.
