the curved sides rising from a recessed base to an eight-lobed foliate rim, decorated with mother-of-pearl to the interior with a central medallion enclosing a scholar seated at a sampan boat admiring a riverside scenery with willow and birds, an attendant standing near the rear of the boat paddling along the lotus pond, the well encircled by an undulating composite floral scroll, all reserved on a black ground, the base lacquered black and with a red lacquer seal, Japanese wood box.
