Représenté debout sur une base arrondie sculptée de flots, la tête tournée vers la gauche, traits saillants, sourcils broussailleux, portant barbe et moustache, vêtu d'une longue robe monastique retombant en plis harmonieux, les bras croisés sur la poitrine, mains cachées dans les manches. Hauteur : 14,5 cm. (5 ¾ in.). Poids : 164 gr. Estimation : 200 000 / 300 000 € 

A VERY RARE RHINOCEROS HORN FIGURE OF BODHIDHARMA, CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

"However, when we come to the figure of Daruma standing on the waves it is different. This figure is the only one I have seen of this type and is therefore exceptionally rare. The only other carving I can compare with it comes from a collection in London and depicts the starving Buddha . Your carving is, indeed, a masterpiece". Les sculptures de personnages en corne de rhinocéros à part entière, ne faisant pas partie du décor d'une coupe, sont excessivement rares. Quelques très rares exemples sont connus et publiés à ce jour. La statuette de Bodhidharma présentée ici est probablement l'un des plus belle connue ainsi que la statuette de Manjusri provenant de la collection Arthur M . Sackler et illustrée dans Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros horn carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, ill. 76. Une autre statuette de Luohan assis est publiée dans Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Carving in China, Londres, 1999, p 109, fig. 103. La sculpture est très proche des statuettes de Bodhidharma en porcelaine Blanc de Chine de l'époque Kangxi (1662-1722). Un Bodhidarma assis en porcelaine, présentant un visage et une robe identiques, est illustré dans Michel Beurdeley, La Porcelaine des Qing, Fribourg 1986, p. 243, pl. 336 

Rhinoceros horn carved figures are very rare. Most of the time, figures are part of cup or ewer decoration. Very few examples are known and published. The present Bodhidharma is probably one of the nicest figure known, as well as the rhinoceros horn figure of Manjusri coming from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection illustrated in Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros horn carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, ill. 76. Another figure of a seated Luohan is published in Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Carving in China, Londres, 1999, p 109, fig. 103. The carving of the present lot is very close to Blanc de Chine porcelain figures of Bodhidharma form the Kangxi period (1662-1722) such as the seated figure with identical features and robe illustrated in Michel Beurdeley, La Porcelaine des Qing, Fribourg 1986, p. 243, pl. 336
