The amusing male figure dressed in baggy yellow trousers beneath a pink waistcoat tied with a red belt under a turquoise open surcoat and wearing a black peaked hat with a long iron-red fold reaching down the back, the right hand raised at the elbow, the female figure also smiling with the head tilted to the left beneath a yellow hood bound with a flower, the right hand raised and the left clutching a fur-trimmed robe above a pink dress and blue underskirt. The taller 13.5cm (5¼in) high (2). Estimate £8,000 - 10,000 (€9,600 - 12,000). Unsold

A pair of male and female figures of this type is illustrated by D.Howard and J.Ayers, China for the West, Vol.II, London, 1978, p.619, no.649. Compare also a similar figure of a girl but wearing a yellow cap formerly in the Garbisch Collection, sold at Sotheby's New York, The Garbisch Collection: Vol. Three, 22-25 May 1980, lot 266.
