A 'Yueyao' Jar and Cover, Northern Song Dynasty

of slightly compressed ovoid form, carved with four quatrefoil panels enclosing peonies divided by swirling designs, all above faint lines radiating from the flared foot, the cover similarly decorated with a bud finial (2). 

Provenance: American private collection, by repute.

A similar waterpot found at a Yue kiln site in Yuyao, is published in Kaogu xuebao, no. 3, 1959, pl. 7:10. Two other similar jars, but without their covers, in the Shanghai Museum and dated to the 10th century is published in Wang Qingzheng, Yueyao, Miseci, Shanghai, 1996, pls. 58 & 59. Another waterpot, of similar form, but with different decoration and with its cover, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, ibid. no. 50.
