Lot 11. A Yueyao celadon-glazed bowl, Northern Song Dynasty; 15cm (6in) diam. Estimate £7,000 - 10,000 (€8,400 - 12,000). Sold for £ 8,125 (€ 9,119). Photo Bonhams

Carved in the interior well with four meandering peony blossoms encircling a floral medallion, the exterior with pleated pattern, wood box and cover. (3).

Provenance: Dr. Soro, Italian diplomat to Japan in the 1980's and then by descent.

Exhibited: Chinese Ceramic Exhibition, Kamakura Modern Art Museum, June 1952

Published: San Sai 58; Commerce 8, Vol.3.

Note: The present lot was described by Minokichi Hasegawa in the article Mondialism on Art, published in Commerce 8, Vol.3, August 1952, '... so beautiful as to make one tremble at the very existence of such a marvellous Yueh-chou Yao ware. A look at this ware made one feel that the Ju Yao ware of the Sun Dynasty (12th Century) which we have had in praise up to date seemed like the appearance of a star on a moonlight night.. It is indeed to be regretted that while Japan had been in possession of such a product of art of world renown the product had fallen into the hands of Dr. Soro, with specialists and connoisseurs paying practically no attention.'
