image (1)

A Meissen Augustus Rex bottle vase, circa 1735. Photo Sotheby's

of large size painted with three vignettes made of two branches of indianische Blumen tied with a ribbon, encasing bird including quails and a cockerel and insects, with further birds in flight and scattered flower sprigs, AR monogram in underglaze-blue, incised Former's mark possibly for Rehschuck. 34.4cm., 13 1/2 in. high. Estimation 8,000 — 12,000 GBP

This form of decoration of birds strutting on minimal patches of ground occurs frequently on teawares. A three footed creampot and cover decorated with this form is illustrated by Hermann Jedding, Meissener Porzellan des 18 Jahrhunderts in Hamburger Privatbesitz, 1982, p. 129, fig. 114. A teapot painted with fighting birds is illustrated The Wark collection, Early Meissen Porcelain catalogue, 1984, p.140, no.195. It is more unusual to find this decoration on vases.  A pair of coloured ground gu-form vases painted with vignettes of similar birds in landscapes, one with a crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue was offered at Sothebys on 21 June 1955, lot 40. An AR vase decorated in a similar manner attributed to Johann Christoph Horn, The Wark collection, ibid., p. 142, no. 204, col. pl. 22. A further AR vase with similar cockerel decoration was sold at Christies London, 9 June 1986, lot 173.
