of rectangular form, well carved in relief with a scene of a figure in a flat-bottomed boat being poled towards a humpback bridge beneath a tall overhanging pine tree, with jagged mountains in the distance, and an inscription above giving the title and the date Daoguang jichou nian chun yue shang wan, 'the first week of Spring of the jichou year (1829) of Daoguang', and the signature Chen Guozhi zhi, (made by Chen Guozhi), framed; 38 by 26.5 cm., 15 by 10 1/2 in. This plaque belongs to a small group of porcelain wares by Chen Guozhi, a ceramic artist active during the Daoguang period (1821-50) at Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, and regarded as one of the three masters of carved porcelain. Renown for his ability to capture movement and his distinctive meticulous style, Chen individually crafted and signed his porcelain creations, which often imitated wood, ivory and bamboo.

Further examples of Chen Guozhi signed ceramics include two brushpots and a seal-paste box, included in the Exhibition of Carved Lacquer and Other Objects, Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1978, cat. nos 3,4 and 57; two brushpots depicting scholars in a landscape, sold in our London rooms, one, 15th June 1982, lot 349, the second, 5th December 1995, lot 331. Compare also a smaller unsigned plaque decorated with a similar landscape design, sold in these rooms, 29th May 1978, lot 865.
